2015 Workshop on Scientific Decision Supports for Emergency Preparedness of Natural Hazards

2015.07.27
Taiwan is at high-risk of natural disasters. On one hand, Taiwan situates in one of the major Northwestern Pacific typhoon paths and is affected by an average of 3.7 typhoons each year. The gust and heavy rainfall associated with typhoon usually induce flooding, debris flow and slope-land disasters, which leads to casualty and economic losses. On the other hand, Taiwan, at the boundary of the active convergence zone between the Eurasian and Philippine Sea plates, is under intensive threats from earthquakes. These natural hazards may severely impact the society. To effectively use science and technology to support the decision making of disaster emergency operation and disaster management may help the government and the public to prepare better before, during, and after the disaster events and, subsequently, help reduce the economic losses and casualties. In the last few years, along the rising wave of open data, the disaster reduction and prevention community of Taiwan has been making efforts to effectively disseminate disaster prevention information as well as to integrate the interdisciplinary disaster monitoring, warning, and impact assessment information and tools. In addition, the community has developed and established integrated display platforms. These actions have significantly improved the disaster emergency operation and brought new advances to the disaster management technology. This year, this project plans to hold a short-term training workshop and to invite domestic experts as well as scholars, researchers, and government officials from Asian-Pacific and Central or South America to participate in this workshop. Based on the experiences on scientific decision making support for disaster emergency operation in the last few years, we will not only share with the participants Taiwan’s experiences on disaster emergency operation and disaster management but also learn from other countries to enhance Taiwan’s capabilities on disaster reduction. Through this international experience exchange, we may strengthen Taiwan’s cooperation with the Asian-Pacific and Central or South America countries and also help improve Taiwan’s visibility.
